Why I don’t over stylise…

Why I Don’t Over-Direct: My Natural Approach to Capturing Human Performances

As a fashion and portrait photographer working across London and the northwest, I’ve learned that the most powerful images come from real, unforced moments. Beauty is imperfect.

In every model portfolio shoot, editorial campaign, or headshot session, my goal is to create a space where the subject feels seen, confident, and relaxed—because that’s when the magic happens.

High-End Fashion Doesn’t Mean Over-Posed

It isn’t about the technicalities of it all. They should only serve to enhance the model’s performance. “Colla voce” is the Italians say- the music follows the voice. Whether I’m shooting a new face for a London model agency portfolio, or directing a fashion film in the Peak District, I avoid forced poses and extended waiting times.

Instead, I look for performance and how someone inhabits the space, the clothes, and their own presence. It has to feel like them.

I’ll give direction, of course. But the real impact comes when a subject is moving, breathing, reacting, not just holding a pose. Think Peter Lindbergh, Hedi Slimane, Vogue editorials—there’s movement, story, feeling.

A Natural Approach Means Better Images

Clients often tell me they’re “not models.” That’s perfect. I don’t want rehearsed perfection—I want presence.

By creating a shoot environment that’s light, calm, and purposeful, I help models and creatives deliver natural, high-impact performances.

Even in studio headshots, I avoid cookie-cutter lighting or identical setups. I choose light based on what brings out personality and character of the individual. That’s how I capture images that feel timeless and true.

Performance as Storytelling

In my recent editorial photography projects and fashion video shoots, I’ve blended cinematic direction with still imagery—giving the model a scenario or emotion to react to.

This isn’t just for aesthetics. It helps the subject forget the camera and fall into a flow state, which results in portraits and fashion photos that feel real.

When shooting model portfolio packages for clients in London, Liverpool, or Manchester, I often shoot behind-the-scenes video too. These moments reveal as much value as the final shot.

Why This Matters for Your Portfolio

Whether you’re an agency-signed model or booking your first shoot, this approach means:

• You’ll feel comfortable and directed, not over-managed.

• You’ll walk away with images that look unique and professional, not generic.

• Your headshots, portraits, and editorials will reflect your authentic energy.
